How to use MediaWiki to create a simple Blog

MediaWiki is an extremely powerful piece of software and there are many extensions to enhance it and even use it for things which it had not been designed for - for example, a simple blogging platform.

I've seen sites running MediaWiki as their blog platform, but it should be clear, that a wiki software was not designed for that purpose. Of course, the flexibility allows to give it blog-like functionality but with a basic and unmodified MediaWiki installation, you have only a few options:

1. Write articles like ordinary wiki pages. One page per article. Use a automatically created index (like a category index) to get the overview.
2. like 1), but manually construct the overview and index page, using parts of the article pages.
3. use large pages with multiple articles per page

Now, 1) won't look very attractive, of course. 2) and 3) may work fine but will result in quite some work to get everything in sync and up to date. It's probably suitable for small blogs with a single new post every few days but even then, it is not very elegant and far from being user friendly.

Use Lightbox with MediaWiki

Lightbox 2 is a very popular JavaScript module which can be used to open images in some kind of overlayed frame. It is simple to install and can be used with almost any kind of webpage. Extensions for easy integration exist for most blog or CMS sofware packages and MediaWiki is no exception.

To see it in action, simply click the image on the right, which is using a thumb modifier. The image on the left is inserted without a thumbnail so LightBox will ignore it and you'll be taken to the image page.

The extension for MediaWiki can integrate this fine, little script into your wiki site. The installation is easy and straightforward, explained in detail on the linked page. The extension works transparently on any wiki page and automatically converts thumbnail links to LightBox links.
